Abbas Sajid

International Student Recruitment Consultant for Universities and Colleges

Recruiting students across borders is one of the most rewarding and most unpredictable parts of higher education. As an international student recruitment consultant, I help universities and colleges choose the right markets, build agent and channel partner networks they can measure, run campaigns timed to each intake, and convert offers into students who actually arrive and enroll.

International student recruitment is changing fast

The rules of international recruitment have shifted several times in recent years. Major study destinations have changed visa, dependant and post-study work policies. New destinations are competing for the same students. Students compare costs, outcomes and safety more carefully, and they research on social media and messaging apps long before they speak to an agent. Market intelligence sources such as ICEF Monitor track these shifts closely.

For institutions, this means that relying on one country or a handful of agents is risky. A single policy change can empty a pipeline. The universities doing well are those with a diversified mix of markets, direct digital recruitment alongside agents, and fast, personal conversion from enquiry to enrollment.

What I do as your international student recruitment consultant

Market selection and prioritisation

I help you decide where to recruit, based on data rather than habit. We look at your programmes, fees, entry requirements and scholarships against student demand, competition, ability to pay, visa outcomes and your existing alumni in each country. The result is a shortlist of priority, growth and test markets, with targets for each.

Agent and channel partner networks

Agents remain a major source of international students for many institutions. I help you select agents carefully, agree clear contracts and commission terms, train them on your programmes, give them good marketing material, and track every application they send through to enrollment. Weak agents are coached or replaced; strong ones get more support.

Intake planning

Each intake needs a timeline that works backwards from the enrollment date: campaign launch, application deadlines, offer turnaround, deposit deadlines, document checks and pre-arrival support. I build intake calendars for each market, aligned with local exam and academic calendars.

In-country and digital campaigns

I plan campaigns that reach students directly in their home markets: country-specific landing pages, search and social campaigns, webinars and virtual open days, student ambassador content, scholarship campaigns and parent-focused messaging. Campaigns are coordinated with agents so you are not bidding against your own partners.

Conversion from offer to arrival

A large share of international offers never turn into enrolled students. I help admissions teams respond faster, personalise communication, run pre-departure webinars, connect offer holders with current students and track every applicant through deposit, visa and arrival. My page on working with a student enrollment consultant explains this conversion work in detail.

Reporting by market and partner

You will see applications, offers, deposits, visas and enrollments by country, agent and channel, with cost per enrolled student for each. That shows clearly where to invest for the next intake.

Building an agent network you can measure

I have built channel partner networks from zero, so I know how quickly they can grow, and how quickly they can go wrong without structure. A measurable agent network has five parts:

  1. SelectionCheck experience, the institutions they already represent, student outcomes, references and how they treat students.
  2. AgreementClear territories, commission terms, performance expectations and a code of conduct.
  3. EnablementRegular training, a partner portal or shared drive with up-to-date materials, and a named contact at your institution.
  4. TrackingEvery lead and application tagged by agent, with conversion reports shared each month.
  5. ReviewQuarterly reviews where top agents earn more support and weak or non-compliant agents are put on improvement plans or released.

Markets I work across

  • South AsiaIndia, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, with large, price-sensitive and highly competitive student populations who research heavily online and through agents.
  • AfricaNigeria, Kenya, Ghana and other markets, with fast-growing demand and strong interest in career outcomes and scholarships.
  • Middle EastThe UAE and the Gulf, where many students and expatriate families compare international and branch campus options.

For Indian institutions recruiting international students

Indian universities are increasingly recruiting students from abroad, supported by government initiatives such as Study in India. I help Indian institutions position their programmes for students from Asia, Africa and the Middle East, build international pages and campaigns, partner with agents in source markets, and set up admissions support that international applicants expect.

Ethical, compliant recruitment

International students are making a life-changing decision, often with their family’s savings. I work only with transparent agents, clear information on fees and outcomes, and honest marketing. Campaigns respect the data protection laws of each market, and agent conduct is monitored, because one bad agent can damage an institution’s reputation in an entire country.

Frequently asked questions

Do you replace our education agents?

No. Agents are usually part of a strong recruitment mix. I help you choose the right agents, support them better and measure them fairly, while also building direct recruitment so you are not dependent on one source.

Which countries should we recruit from?

That depends on your programmes, fees, entry requirements and scholarships. A market assessment compares demand, competition, affordability and visa outcomes to recommend where to start.

How long does it take to build a new international market?

Most new markets take one to two intakes to produce consistent enrollments, because partner relationships, brand awareness and alumni referrals take time. Direct digital campaigns can produce enquiries much sooner.

Can you help with student visas?

I do not give immigration advice. I help your admissions team and agents prepare students well and communicate clearly, and I link to the official visa guidance for each destination.
